You may recognize this scene if you’ve ever visited Venice, Italy. Pay attention to the gondola sailor. He’s standing behind the passengers gently guiding the small boat along the canal. The passengers don’t have to know the way, they just have to trust the guide to direct them. And, because they don’t have to worry themselves with steering the boat, they can relax and enjoy the beauty around them. Perhaps you can even hear his voice directing their attention to the wonders that surround them.
- Listen to the Holy Spirit.
- Trust Him to show you the way to go.
- Receive the gift of His attention and care for you.
Let the Holy Spirit guide your choices in a practical experiment.
The next time you go to a store, practice being attentive to the Holy Spirit. Pay attention to all the little choices you make on the errand: where to park the car, which door to enter, what foods to buy, which checkout line to stand in, who to talk to, etc. Ask the Holy Spirit to guide you, pause to listen, and act as you are led. If not at a store, try it with your morning routine. Present all of your choices before the Lord, pause to listen, and act as you are led.
After you’ve tried it, reflect on the experience:
- How did the Lord speak to you?
- When did the Spirit prompt you to try something new or different than your usual routine?
- What do you notice about your relationship with the Holy Spirit?
