An integral ministry in One Challenge is that of member care. On some level, most OC mission workers engage in care for the ministry partners, leaders, pastors, and people they serve. In an official sense, member care is the ongoing preparation, equipping, and empowering of mission workers for effective and sustainable life, ministry, and work.
Mihai, OC mission worker in Europe, serves on the Board of Member Care Europe. Recently, he and his wife Tammy served at the European Member Care Consultation in Malaga, Spain.
Mihai led a workshop on understanding Generation Y & Z and helped with much of the organizing and logistics of the conference. Tammy led the worship time and also led a workshop on creative and contemplative worship.
“We both learned so much about what it means to walk alongside those who are suffering, and even more about how to get back up stronger than ever after we have been down,” Mihai says.
One participant said of the conference: “I really enjoyed this consultation because it was practical. We all go through tough times on the mission field and need to hear the testimonies of those who persevered amidst adversity.”
Jars of Clay
The theme of the conference was building resilience in the life of the Christian worker, hinging on the passage from 2 Corinthians about jars of clay.
“But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us. We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed. We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body. For we who are alive are always being given over to death for Jesus’ sake, so that his life may also be revealed in our mortal body,” 2 Corinthians 4:7-11 (NIV).
One participant said of the theme: “I learned that resilience is a process of trusting God and allowing him to mold and shape me.”
Another said: “I love the imagery of the broken jar that is put back together, but still shows the cracks. It made me realize that all the heartbreak and tough times have made me a better, stronger, and a more effective missionary.”
Connections & Future Plans
The conference had the largest attendance in its history with over 215 people.
“It was great to network and build more connections for ministry in Europe,” Mihai says. “I have already been asked by the Board of Member Care Europe to be a catalyst for forming member care teams in places like Poland, Hungary, and Italy. We cannot wait to see the doors that God opens!”
