“People need to think of non-profit board seats as a deep responsibility and a job that requires due care and attention.” (Forbes magazine, 6/2011)
At One Challenge we feel deeply privileged to have godly men and women who think that way. Chairman Michele Wilson gave us this heartfelt report of their March 16-18 meeting in Colorado Springs.
To the One Challenge Family
Since this was my first board meeting as chairman, I want to give you a glimpse of how God blessed us. Although several board members had to overcome air travel delays due to a huge east coast storm, and we scrambled to get each committee staffed with board directors to conduct the business at hand. God provided and it was a joy to see each need met. We were often reminded of Proverbs 16:9, “The mind of a man plans his way, but the Lord directs his steps.”
An Atmosphere of Warmth and Unity
We began our time at President Dean and Kathie Carlson’s home for a delicious Lebanese dinner cooked by a long-time OC worker, also a gourmet Lebanese chef. What an honor it was to hear of his faith and meet some of his family.
We began that evening by sharing prayer requests and praying for one another. That set the stage for the overall tenor of the board meeting, which was one of warmth and unity. I am awed at our God for providing the caliber of people around the board room table, with such genuine interest in what each OC worker is doing as God has placed them around the world to serve Him.
Encouraged By What God Is Doing
As the agenda unfolded during the plenary sessions, we honored the memory of Paul Stephan, who died at 102 as our longest standing board member emeritus. How we appreciate all those who have gone before us! We looked ahead at the 2020 Five-year Strategic Plan and heard encouraging updates on the progress, as well as sobering messages as to the constraints that we face as a mission.
Yet with Dean and his leadership team, along with the OC family around the world, and partnerships forming that will make a strategic difference in fulfilling God’s plan, we left encouraged by what we see God doing. As each committee reported to the entire board, it was evident that much work had been accomplished in the areas for which they were responsible.
Sharpening Strategic Direction
I would like to highlight two of them. The report from the Strategy and Ends Committee brought expertise to sharpening strategic direction and set the stage for dialogue with the area directors in our upcoming September meeting on this topic. Part of our responsibility as a board is to keep us true to our vision and keep us all on His strategic path to accomplish that vision. We know that being with the area directors and hearing personally from them will give us the direction we need to do our part as we seek to serve.
Progress Toward Financial Strength
Secondly, we were greatly encouraged by the Finance Committee report. This year the Lord has enabled OC to make significant strides toward a place of stronger financial health. Even the auditors expressed optimism as they ended their audit report to the Finance Committee with a hearty, “Way to go!” We know that this challenge has been born by everyone in the organization. We pray that God will continue to strengthen us financially so we can run without encumbrances the race He has set before us in fulfilling the Great Commission.
A Time of Unprecedented Opportunity for the Gospel
There is more opportunity today to share the gospel than we have seen in our lifetime. The unrest in the world produces a desire for peace which can only be met in our Lord Jesus. What a privilege to be part of the solution. I believe God has called One Challenge to a very critical work which requires continued sacrifice, humility, an ear tuned to God’s voice, and a courageous heart to follow His leading as we partner with others to fulfill His Great Commission.
As we heard reports from the fields, story after story demonstrated sacrifice, humility and courage. We praise our Father for all He is doing through our people…their passionate commitment blesses us as a board. We are with them and together we will see all that God desires accomplished!
