Today, the world seems to grow smaller by the minute. With more access to travel and job opportunity overseas, immigrants can be found everywhere. Relocating to the region of Southern Africa are more than 700,000 Chinese people. OC workers Karl and Jenny have been a part of reaching out to these Chinese people in Southern Africa and they hope to see more South African believers reach this growing people group.
Highlights from a recent SACON Workshop
In June, the Johannesburg Southern Africa Chinese Outreach Network (SACON) held a workshop for 40 participants. “The facilitators from our SACON team included a Chinese church pastor, mission workers from South Africa and the U.S., and local believers who are working among the Chinese. We are grateful for their passion and commitment to reach out to the Chinese diaspora!” Karl says.
The purpose of the workshop was to provide awareness of the increasing numbers of Chinese people in the region and to introduce Chinese worldview, religion, culture, and language. “We also had the chance to visit and have lunch in the Buddhist temple. The workshop ended with highlighting practical ways to build friendships, share the gospel, and effectively follow up with a Chinese person,” Karl says.
Local Chinese believers are willing to come alongside South Africans to help them develop skills in reaching this community. “We are praying that many South Africans will continue learning the Chinese language, culture, and ministry and increase their commitment to share the love of Christ with the Chinese,” Karl says.
SACON desires to host more workshops around Johannesburg to continue to educate and equip local believers. “We are grateful for how God is calling his people to respond to this strategic Chinese mission opportunity in our ‘backyard,’” Karl says.
Praying for SACON
- Pray for the SACON teams located in six cities across South Africa, that they would mobilize believers to evangelize and disciple the Chinese. Pray that more SACON teams will be formed in other cities.
- Pray for God’s wisdom for Karl as he coordinators the network and empowers more leaders and teams.
- Pray God will multiply more Chinese disciple-making churches in Southern Africa and back in China
Missions Mobilization
One Challenge is an international mission sending agency empowering local church ministry in more than 100 countries around the world. We seek to empower the whole body of Christ to bring a transforming love and hope to all people. When invited by local leaders, OC facilitates local bodies of believers to identify, train, and send global workers toward realizing a “from everywhere to everywhere” vision.
