Human trafficking is a global epidemic that affects nearly every nation in the world. Southeast Asia is a major global contributor to victims of human trafficking. In response to this heart-wrenching situation, Preventing Exploitation Actively Restoring Lives (PEARL) began, an organization rooted in prayer and in the idea that every human life has value.
“PEARL’s goal is to empower our SE Asian neighbors to continue in school, learn marketable skills, increase their self-confidence, and be educated regarding the very real danger of human trafficking as it relates to their reality,” says G., a worker in the area.

The FREEdom Run
In order to bring further awareness to the issue, as we celebrated our freedoms on Veteran’s Day in the U.S., FREE (a student activist club on MCS campus) and PEARL hosted a FREEdom Run in their country to run against the bondage of slavery emphasizing Isaiah 61:1 –
“… He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
to proclaim freedom for the captives
and release from darkness for the prisoners …”
“It was an amazing morning with over 100 runners involved in 1K Fun Run, 5K individual, and 10K team races. The community enthusiastically supported the cause and the participants,” says D., PEARL’s co-founder. “The goal was to bring awareness to the effects of human trafficking right here in our community and how we can make a difference.”
Many were blessed by the event and the message against trafficking was heard.
Currently, PEARL has several programs that deal with awareness, education, teenage intervention, and empowerment.
One of the programs has nine at-risk women being equipped on a twice-weekly basis with the marketable skill of sewing at a training center. “These women are also being educated concerning the risks connected with human trafficking. They, in turn, are warning others in their communities,” G. says. Their products are available for purchase.
PEARL also works with women in crisis situations as the need arises.
The Power of Prayer
The real foundation of the organization is prayer. “Programs are fleeting but the power of prayer and the purposes of the Word of God stand forever,” D. says. Therefore, PEARL and the team in SE Asia covet your prayers.
- Pray for impact. Pray those present at the FREEdom Run can help protect their neighbors from being exploited or become victims of human trafficking.
- Pray the love these people experience from those at the FREEdom Run who care for their safety will lead them to a relationship with the Lord.
- Pray for finances for on-going programs to help men, women and students be educated on the issue of human trafficking, for programs to help give sustainable income, and crisis-action programs.
