“Anne with an E” recently debuted on Netflix, and in the spirit of Anne’s youthfulness, determination, and steadfast loyalty, One Challenge would like to introduce a young company who is a kindred spirit of ours, and whose fearless leader and founder reminds us of the titular character.
What is Kaleidoscope?
Kaleidoscope meets the distinct needs of third culture kids by empowering them to create safe spaces, share their stories, and process transition. Six women power this company, most under the age of 30, led by Jessi, a woman whose passion and youthful exuberance is infectious. This charisma, and God’s provision, has grown Kaleidoscope from doing one event in 2014, to seven events in the first seven months of 2017.
Kaleidoscope believes every third culture kid has the chance to uniquely embrace and benefit from their identity as a citizen of the “third culture.” To help realize this benefit and achieve their potential, Kaleidoscope provides TCK-specific programs for kids ages 4 -18 that explore the highs and lows of TCK life, tools to create a safe space to process and share their stories, and achieve relevant transition.
The vision of Kaleidoscope was birthed in Central Asia, from a young woman who wanted to create something special for people just like her – third culture kids. Early in her life, the Lord broke Jessi’s heart for kids, specifically ones who grew up outside of their passport countries. Kids who are hidden immigrants, who don’t fit here or there, but rather claim global citizenship.
Jessi didn’t know how she would accomplish this vision. What she did know? It came from God, he’d sort out the details, and all she had to do was remain faithful to his call on her life.
“I started Kaleidoscope because I wanted to see TCKs grow up to be the best they can be,” Jessi says.
One Challenge met Jessi six years ago. She came to us through an OC TCK who recognized that Jessi’s heart aligned perfectly with OC’s member care heart, which, beginning with Diane Morris, and now Deänne Boesel, has always invested in their TCKs, providing training and debriefing on and off the field. Knowing this, Jessi came to intern with One Challenge and see if our ethos could be helpful in the creation of Kaleidoscope.
That summer she was with OC for two weeks, but despite the brevity, it was the beginning of a beautiful friendship. From that time, One Challenge invested in training Jessi, supplying her with foundation and tools that she has now made her own.
“I owe a lot to OC. They took a chance on young girl with a big dream and gave me the training, support network, and confidence to make it come true,” Jessi says. “Kaleidoscope went through some major growing pains in the Boesel family living room. I’ll forever be grateful for their investment in my life and the continued partnership with OC.”
OC loves that Jessi has poured her heart and soul into our TCKs, and for the last several years she has been able to do the same for TCKs around the world.
How We Partner
Along with training and idea brainstorming, one of the main ways OC partners with Kaleidoscope is through the provision of personnel to staff the global retreats Kaleidoscope runs for a variety of organizations. Kaleidoscope’s vision of empowering TCKs rings true for One Challenge’s TCKs, many who have benefited from OC’s summer programs – CORE and PEP – and many who have worked the programs in the past.
Kaleidoscope provides an opportunity for OC TCKs to give back, sharing their knowledge and experiences with kids from other countries and other organizations. OC TCKs have joined Kaleidoscope on trips to Thailand, Japan, North Africa, Turkey, Colorado, and Kansas. In fact, two OC TCKs have joined Kaleidoscope as year-round staff!
One Challenge loves that our TCKs choose to work with Kaleidoscope. We invest in our TCKs so they can be agents for the kingdom wherever they are planted. It’s encouraging to see the next generation step up and change the world one life at a time.
Pray for Kaleidoscope
Kaleidoscope covets your prayers.
- Three Kaleidoscope conferences need staff: Bali, Kyrgyzstan, and Colorado. Pray for the right individuals to join and that the Lord will provide abundant finances.
- Pray for Jessi and her staff as they seek ways to engage more volunteers and churches in order to impact third culture kids around the world.
